Why supercapacitors are commonly used as DVRs' energy storage units?

Oct. 22, 2026

Compared with chemical batteries for energy storage, supercapacitors are more compatible with dynamic voltage restorers' (DVRs) applications due to the following reasons:

1. High Power Density and Efficient Charge and Discharge:

Supercapacitors can provide extremely high instantaneous power, supporting rapid, high-current charge and discharge, with efficiencies exceeding 90%, low internal resistance, and low losses.

When a voltage sag occurs, the DVR needs to inject a large amount of power into the grid in a very short time to support the voltage. The high power density of supercapacitors makes them ideal "power sinks," capable of instantly releasing huge amounts of energy to meet these demanding instantaneous power demands.

2. Ultra-Long Cycle Life:

High-quality supercapacitors can withstand up to a million deep charge and discharge cycles with minimal performance degradation, far exceeding that of chemical batteries.

Voltage sags can occur frequently on the grid. The ultra-long cycle life of supercapacitors ensures that the DVR can handle these events countless times without the need for frequent energy storage unit replacement, thus ensuring the long-term cost-effectiveness and reliability of the system.

3. Fast Charge and Discharge Capability:

Supercapacitors charge extremely quickly, replenishing energy in a very short time (tens of seconds to minutes). After an event, the DVR's energy storage unit needs to be quickly recharged for the next use. Supercapacitors' extremely fast charging speed ensures the system can quickly return to a "ready" state, something traditional batteries cannot match.

4. High Reliability and Wide Temperature Operation:

Their energy storage process primarily involves physical changes, resulting in stable performance and a wide operating temperature range (-40°C to 70°C), making them adaptable to harsh environments.

5. Maintenance-free:

Virtually maintenance-free throughout its lifecycle, reducing the complexity and cost of long-term O&M.

Although supercapacitors have limitations such as low energy density (unsuitable for long-term power supply) and high initial cost, these shortcomings are overcome in DVRs, where they are primarily used to cope with extremely short-duration voltage sags (typically 1-3 seconds). Therefore, supercapacitors are currently the ideal choice for DVRs.
